The University of Cologne’s Department of History is one of the largest in the German speaking countries, currently hosting 21 professorships.

In addition to traditional fields such as Ancient History, Medieval History and Modern History, the department comprises fields focussing on the history of specific areas such as North American History, Iberian and Latin American History as well as Eastern European History. The Department also includes history didactics and teacher training.

Furthermore, the Department also focusses on history and the media. It maintains not only a Centre for the History of Journalism and a Centre for History and Film, but also offers a variety of study options, i.e. through research projects dealing with media in history and courses to discuss the internet and explore its relevance and use when studying history.

The Department’s outstanding research and wide range of courses for multiple BA/MA degree programmes reflect our strong career orientation. Historians and students alike benefit from the close interdisciplinary networking within the Faculty of Arts and Humanities.

Moreover, the Department maintains a network with several European and global partner Universities which offer students the opportunity to study abroad.
