Cologne in comparison with Italian cities (11th-13th centuries)

verantwortlich: Dr. Lioba Geis

The international network is dedicated to the comparison of Cologne with selected Italian cities from the eleventh to the thirteenth centuries and deals in particular with aspirations of urban autonomy, the inner-city position of the (arch)bishop, the ideas of urban sanctity, urban identities, topographical developments and the consequences of Hohenstaufen rule north and south of the Alps. In addition to structural comparisons, the network also examines personal contacts and exchange opportunities that existed between Cologne and individual Italian cities.
